TKP’s 5 Easy Steps to Kitchen Cabinet Organization

Organizing your kitchen cabinets may seem like a discouraging task, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve created a guide for you to use next time you decide you’ve had enough of your existing kitchen cabinet storage configuration. Whether you store food items in your cabinets, or bake ware, cookware, and dishes, there are some awesome ways to keep it all together and organized. The following are kitchen organization solutions to help you organize and de-clutter your cabinets.

What You’ll Need:

  • Pan organizers
  • Cabinet baskets
  • Small shelving units
  • Shelf dividers
  • Spice Organizers

Kitchen Organization Step 1 – Clear Them Out.

Before you can organize the kitchen cabinets, you’ll need to remove everything. Separate all of the items you remove from the cabinets into the following three piles:

  • Pile 1 – Trash:This would include empty food packaging, anything expired, broke containers, appliances that don’t work, etc.
  • Pile 2 – Donate:It’s a good idea to give away any edible food items or working appliances that you know you’ll never use. You can donate the food items to a food pantry and any dishes, pots, pans, and appliances to a newlywed or a thrift store.
  • Pile 3 – Keep:This is the pile that we’ll work with when setting up your new organized kitchen cabinets.

After you’ve separated all of the items, use kitchen cleaning supplies to clean out the cabinets. Wipe them down, starting with the top shelves and working your way down.

Kitchen Organization Step 2 – Sort the Keepers.

Take the pile of items that you’re keeping and sort them into groups of similar items. Later, you’ll put them away in the cabinets according to their groups. Here are some common groups:

  • If you don’t have a kitchen pantry, or are short on pantry space, you might store some of your food items in the cabinets
  • Glasses and Dishes. This group should consist primarily of the dishes that you use everyday, like plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, etc.
  • Storage Containers. Don’t forget to keep the lids close by so they’re easy to grab, If you need to purchase new storage containers, try to find some that let you snap and store the lids right on the container.
  • Cookbooks and Recipes. Take this time to organize your handwritten recipes in a folder, a binder or store them digitally on any of your mobile devices.
  • Small Appliances.Place all of your small appliances together, things like blender, toaster, mixer, electric can opener, etc.
  • Pots and Pans& their corresponding lids.

Kitchen Organization Step 3 – Arrange Everything in the Cabinets.

After you have everything organized, decide which cabinets you want each group to go in and start to arrange them. Some of the following kitchen cabinet organizers might come in handy:

  • Pan organizers that allow you to stand pans and lids on their side so they slide right in to their place.
  • Kitchen cabinet basketsfor smaller food items, spice containers, recipe cards, and other small items.
  • Tiered shelvesfor cupboards that can store a good amount, but not so deep that your items get lost in the back.
  • Cabinet shelf dividersto keep items and groups of items separate and organized.
  • Adjustable shelving to help separate items. Some stand-alone cabinets and below the counter cabinets do not contain a lot of shelving. Adjustable shelves allow you to change the configuration of your cabinet storage once in a while. For instance, when you get new appliances or just want to switch things up to keep your kitchen fresh.

When you have all of the kitchen organizers you need, you can look through the cabinets to decide which items work best in each cabinet.

Our Spokane Kitchen Cabinet Company TIP:

Your dishes and glasses would be convenient right above the dishwasher, and your pots and pans would be handy next to the stove.

Kitchen Organization Step 4 – Customize.

Add any extras that you think will improve the functionality of your kitchen cabinets. Here are a few kitchen organizers that we recommend:

Spice Racks. Spice Racks and spice drawer organizers make accessing seasonings easy. No more shuffling around in a deep cabinet and knocking over glass bottles anymore! We do that all time.

Kitchen Storage Containers. These can be used for just about anything: left-overs, flours, sugars, spices, herbs, candy, snacks, cereal, backing supplies, and more.

Kitchen Storage Bins & Can Organizers. Store more without having to stack with these durable steel can organizers.  Other items that would usually be thrown in the cabinet without rhyme or reason can be sorted into these kitchen storage bins.

Rolling Shelves. These slide-out shelves give you additional storage layers in your cabinets so you don’t have to stack your stuff and create a cluttered mess. Plus, they roll out so you don’t have to go digging for what you need in the dark.

Kitchen Organization Step 5 – Maintain.

Now that you have clean and organized kitchen cabinets, it’s a good idea to practice a little upkeep. It is not hard, and only takes a small amount of time. Schedule a time at least 2x a year to go through and organize your cabinets. It won’t be nearly as time consuming as it was this time. When you use something, put it back where it belongs. It is a simple practice that makes a big difference in the long run.

Good luck with everything and we’ll see you next time!
